US 17 ACE Basin Parkway

Partnerships

US 17 ACE Basin Segments 1 and 2A would not be under construction without SCDOT’s long-standing commitment to improving the safety of this two-lane highway. Community members in the area and families of people injured and killed along this stretch of roadway diligently followed public hearings and the funding process, reminding statewide leadership of the project’s need and importance.

SCDOT could not have made this project happen without leadership from the following groups and individuals: The ACE Basin Task Force, the Agency Coordination Team (made up of Federal and State Agencies including FHWA), input from community groups such as the Advocates for Change on Highway 17, as well as the Governor Mark Sanford and several legislators including Senator Clementa Pinckney, Senator Catherine Ceips, Representative Robert Brown, and Representative Ken Hodges.

Prior to this widening project, US 17 ACE Basin between Gardens Corner and Jacksonboro was recognized as one of the nation’s most deadly highways in a 2005 assessment. Sadly, 33 fatalities occurred on this section of the two-lane road between the years of 1997 and February 2005.

Some of these deaths have been marked by friends and families with white crosses within the Right of Way along the roadway. Widening plans for US 17 ACE Basin Segment 1 include the construction of safer, wider shoulders and embankments along either side of the roadway.

If you have information or questions about these memorials, please contact Chris Hernandez, SCDOT Project Manager at (888) 692-9986 or through this site’s contact page.
