erosion control
Erosion control is a project priority. It is important to manage the movement of sediment within the work area. Silt fences around the project area are carefully maintained and monitored to prevent sediment from leaving the project area.
slope drains
Slope drains, such as the one seen in this image, reduce the harmful impacts of rainfall on slopes by directing water into pipes instead of down the slope surface.
driving concrete piles on bridge
The driving of concrete piles continues on Bridge 1.
construction of temporary trestle bridge
Construction of a temporary trestle bridge begins for Bridge 3. The trestle bridge enables crews to mobilize across the marsh during construction.
Crews have begun to mobilize for one of the project’s two bridges along the new southbound lanes.
This aerial photo shows progress on the southbound lanes between the Combahee River (the north end of the project) and the future Wetland Bridge 3 in Phase 1 of construction.

Prior to this widening project, US 17 ACE Basin between Gardens Corner and Jacksonboro was recognized as one of the nation’s most deadly highways in a 2005 assessment. Sadly, 33 fatalities occurred on this section of the two-lane road between the years of 1997 and February 2005.

Some of these deaths have been marked by friends and families with white crosses within the Right of Way along the roadway. Widening plans for US 17 ACE Basin Segment 1 include the construction of safer, wider shoulders and embankments along either side of the roadway.

If you have information or questions about these memorials, please contact Chris Hernandez, SCDOT Project Manager at (888) 692-9986 or through this site’s contact page.
