The ACE Basin
The ACE Basin - The ACE Basin offers one of the most beautiful natural landscapes in South Carolina. This image is the view west from what will become one of the project’s four bridges.
Preparing the Approach
Preparing the Approach - Crews grade the sub base and place geotextile fabric prior to adding fill dirt for the construction of the approach on the project’s northern most bridge.
Placing fill dirt
Placing fill dirt - Once the roadbed has been cleared, fill dirt is brought onto the site from local borrow pits. Fill dirt is comprised of subsoil, which creates a smooth, compact surface upon which the road’s asphalt can be placed.
Road Compaction
Road Compaction - To insure the road bed is compacted thoroughly, steel wheel rollers drive back and forth across the fill dirt
Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving - Thankful for the opportunity to work on this project, the project team collected canned goods and donations to assist three families living near the project identified by local community leaders.
Turtles
Turtles - The silt fencing works to keep these two turtles from entering the construction zone. Protecting the lives of humans and even animals is a project goal for everyone on the project.

Prior to this widening project, US 17 ACE Basin between Gardens Corner and Jacksonboro was recognized as one of the nation’s most deadly highways in a 2005 assessment. Sadly, 33 fatalities occurred on this section of the two-lane road between the years of 1997 and February 2005.

Some of these deaths have been marked by friends and families with white crosses within the Right of Way along the roadway. Widening plans for US 17 ACE Basin Segment 1 include the construction of safer, wider shoulders and embankments along either side of the roadway.

If you have information or questions about these memorials, please contact Chris Hernandez, SCDOT Project Manager at (888) 692-9986 or through this site’s contact page.
