According to SCDOT’s September 2005 Environmental Assessment, the 22-mile segment of US 17 between Gardens Corner and Jacksonboro, SC, is one of the most dangerous two-lane roads in South Carolina and the nation.
Changeable message boards are located at the ends of the project. Please adhere to posted warnings, obey speed limits, and remain alert when driving through the construction zone.
Thirty-eight percent of crashes on US 17 in this area between 1997 and 2003 were rear-end collisions and 23% were run-off-of-the-road.
Maintain safe traveling distances between vehicles when driving.
Of the 888 total crashes recorded between 1997 and 2003, 58% involved more than one vehicle with driver error cited in almost all cases.
Reduction of posted speed limits and vigilant enforcement have resulted in fewer accidents in the area.
Recognize construction crews are not there to inconvenience you, but to make your future drives even safer. Let ‘em work. Let ‘em live.
